Unemployment insurance

(Arbetslöshetsförsäkring)

Unemployment insurance is intended to provide for your financial needs while you are looking for a new job.

To obtain unemployment benefits, you must be registered with the Swedish Public Employment Service and be actively looking for work. To be entitled for benefits as soon as you become unemployed, register with the Employment Service immediately.

An unemployment insurance fund pays two different kinds of benefits. The size of your benefits depends on whether or not you were a member of the fund and what conditions you meet.

If you want to join an unemployment insurance fund while you are working, you must pay a fee. You don’t have to be a trade union member. The Swedish Federation of Unemployment Insurance Funds has a list of all the funds.
