There are several laws and international treaties that protect the citizens’ fundamental rights.

Sweden has signed most of the United Nations’ documents about human rights. The declaration of human rights states that all human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights.

The human rights apply to all human beings in the world, regardless of country, culture or context.

• everyone has the right to live in and be citizen of a country
• everyone has the right to be protected by his or her country
• everyone has the right to equal treatment by the laws and courts of a country
• everyone has the right to travel within a country and to other countries
• everyone has the right to seek and to get asylum from persecution
• everyone has the right to live the way he or she wants
• everyone has the right to get married, the right to freedom of thought and opinion, and the right to freedom of religion
• every country shall work against poverty
• every country shall make sure that people have jobs and homes, that they have enough to eat, and that they learn to read and write In Sweden, the human rights have been made part of the constitution.
